Gymnastics Terminology

Qualifications. The event every gymnast competes in. This is split into five subdivisions. Four gymnasts per country can compete on each event; a full team is five gymnasts, so not every gymnast will compete every event.

Finals. These are the events where medals are awarded. In women’s artistic gymnastics, there are six medaling events: team finals, all-around finals, and event apparatus finals, which is for vault, bars, beam, and floor.

Total Score. Gymnastics is scored by adding a start value and execution score together, then deducting any neutral deductions from that total.

Start Value. On vault, the start value is a set number assigned to the vault performed. On the other three events, gymnasts receive a score based meeting the requirements for that event, the difficulty of the skills they perform, and any “connection bonus” from doing two or more difficult skills in combination.

Execution. This is the score associated with “traditional gymnastics.” It starts out of a 10.0 for all gymnasts, no matter the difficulty, and points are taken off for mistakes. A fall is 1.0 off, bent legs can be between 0.1 and 0.3 off, etc. There are also deductions on beam and floor related to artistry.
